An automotive trim-pierce die locates a previously drawn or formed component, supports its three-dimensional shape and cuts the final perimeter or selected edge sections. Piercing punches may then produce holes, slots or notches required for later welding, fastening, assembly or locating operations. Depending on part geometry and load distribution, trimming and piercing may be completed in one die or divided into separate operations.

A drawn automotive component may contain springback and local shape variation before trimming. The die must locate the part using stable datums and support areas without forcing it into an incorrect position. Trim-line accuracy depends on the relationship between the formed surface, locating features, cutting inserts and the approved sample condition.
Clearance is selected according to material grade, thickness, tensile strength, edge requirement and cutting direction. Insufficient clearance may increase cutting load and edge chipping, while excessive clearance may increase rollover and burr size. The required burr direction should be confirmed during drawing review. General principles are explained in the stamping die clearance and burr control guide.
A long three-dimensional trim line may not cut at the same time across the complete part. Shear angles and staged cutting can help manage peak load, but they may also introduce lateral force and uneven die loading. The tooling structure, guide system, insert support and pressure center must be reviewed together with the customer press.
Trim scrap, pierced slugs and cut-off sections must leave the tooling without interfering with the part, sensors or moving components. Scrap chutes, die relief, ejectors and discharge direction are selected according to scrap size, die orientation and press conditions. Unstable scrap flow can damage the part or interrupt repeated production.
Replaceable cutting inserts and punches may simplify maintenance in high-wear areas. Selected inserts, punches and cutting edges can be heat-treated to approximately HRC 58–60 depending on tool steel, part material and stamping conditions. TD or Super TD treatment is available for selected in-house die components when required by the project.

A trim die cannot be developed only from a flat blank or final two-dimensional perimeter. The incoming part shape is created by the drawing or forming operation, including its springback, surface variation and locating condition.
For this reason, trim-line development should be coordinated with the drawing, forming, flanging and restriking process. Changes made to an upstream forming die may affect the location and stability of the part in the trim-pierce tool.
