Changdong is good at making metal stamping dies up to 4.2 meters, also we produce small size metal stamping toolings. The company manages the complete stamping die program from the CAE Simulation, layout designs and stamping tooling designs, and finish the machining to tryout and home line tryout to your hands. Meanwhile, the company produces the prototyping parts and stamping parts range from 45-880T. The successful cases include: stamping tools of Leoni connectors, automotive stamping dies of PSA P8 & B618, metal stamping toolings of Cummins exhaust pipe assembly, automobile stamping dies of NISSAN H60B projects, and stamping tools of car audio system, Canon printers, refrigerators, ovens and washing machines and so on.If you need metal stamping dies ,stamping parts or metal prototypings,

Die clearance in metal stamping is the controlled gap between the punch and die cutting edge. It directly affects burr height, edge quality, cutting force, punch wear, tool life, dimensional accuracy, and production stability in blanking, piercing, trimming, and progressive die operations.
Die clearance is the space between the punch and the die opening during a cutting operation. In metal stamping, this clearance allows the material to fracture properly after the punch penetrates the sheet metal.
If the clearance is correct, the stamped edge will have a stable rollover, burnish zone, fracture zone, and burr. If the clearance is not suitable, the part may show excessive burrs, rough edges, poor hole accuracy, or accelerated tool wear.
In stamping die communication, it is important to confirm whether the clearance value refers to single-sided clearance or double-sided clearance.
| Type | Meaning | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Single-Sided Clearance | The gap between punch and die on one side. | Commonly used when calculating punch or die dimensions. |
| Double-Sided Clearance | The total clearance across both sides. | Important for hole size, blank size, and die drawing communication. |
Burr height is one of the most visible signs of die clearance condition. When the clearance is too large, the material may tear excessively, producing a rough edge and heavy burr. When the clearance is too small, cutting force increases and the tool may wear or break faster.
| Clearance Condition | Typical Result | Possible Action |
|---|---|---|
| Too Large | Heavy burrs, rough fracture, poor edge control | Reduce clearance, repair inserts, check cutting edge wear |
| Too Small | High cutting force, secondary shear, punch breakage risk | Increase clearance, check alignment, review punch strength |
| Uneven | One-sided burrs, poor hole accuracy, abnormal wear | Check guide accuracy, punch position, die insert alignment |
Proper stamping die clearance reduces abnormal cutting force and improves punch and die life. For high-volume progressive die production, clearance must be reviewed together with material thickness, hardness, coating, lubrication, punch geometry, and maintenance schedule.
In automotive stamping dies, clearance selection also affects part consistency during long production runs. A small clearance error may become a major quality issue after repeated strokes.

Progressive die or single-operation die structure
In a progressive die, multiple stations work together on the same strip. If clearance is unstable at one station, the problem can affect strip feeding, pilot positioning, burr direction, and downstream forming quality.
For high-volume projects, clearance should be checked during die tryout and monitored during production maintenance. This is especially important for small holes, narrow slots, copper terminals, busbars, and precision automotive stamped parts.
Die clearance is closely related to many common stamping defects, including burrs, punch breakage, scrap jumping, scrap blockage, and dimensional variation. For a broader troubleshooting reference, you can read our common stamping die problems and solutions guide.

Dongguan Changdong Tool & Die Co., Ltd. provides custom metal stamping dies, automotive progressive dies, transfer dies, prototype dies, deep drawing dies, checking fixtures, and sheet metal stamping parts.
Our manufacturing capability includes CAE review, CNC machining, WEDM, grinding, high-speed drilling, die assembly, internal tryout, CMM inspection, 3D blue laser scanning, and 45T–800T press validation.
From a tooling manufacturer’s perspective, die clearance should not be selected only from a standard table. It must be reviewed together with material condition, burr direction, edge quality, punch strength, tolerance requirements, and actual tryout results.
