A drawbead in metal stamping is a raised or grooved feature used in deep drawing dies to control sheet metal flow. It helps balance material feeding, reduce wrinkling, prevent cracking, and improve forming stability in automotive stamping dies and deep drawn parts.
A drawbead is a bead-shaped feature built into a drawing die or blank holder area. During deep drawing, the sheet metal passes over or through the drawbead, creating controlled resistance against material flow.
This resistance helps engineers control how much material enters the die cavity during forming. In automotive stamping, drawbeads are often used for outer panels, structural panels, EV battery tray components, and other large sheet metal parts.
During deep drawing, sheet metal must flow into the die cavity at the right speed and direction. If material flows too easily, wrinkles may appear. If material flow is too restricted, cracking or excessive thinning may occur.
Drawbeads help create localized holding resistance, allowing engineers to control high-flow and low-flow zones around the part.
