CUSTOM PROGRESSIVE TOOLING SUPPORT

As a Progressive Die Supplier, Dongguan Changdong Tool & Die Co., Ltd. supports custom stamping projects from product drawing review and strip-layout planning through die machining, assembly, press tryout and sample inspection.

Each project is developed around the customer’s component geometry, material grade, sheet thickness, tolerance requirements, press specification and expected production volume. The objective is to deliver tooling that can be installed, adjusted, maintained and used under real production conditions.

What Should a Progressive Die Supplier Provide?

A qualified supplier should provide more than a finished tool. The scope should include process evaluation, strip-layout development, detailed die design, component manufacturing, assembly, press tryout, sample validation and technical documentation required for production launch.

Role of a Progressive Die Company

A progressive die company must convert a finished-part drawing into a stable sequence of manufacturing operations. This requires decisions about feed direction, strip pitch, carrier design, pilot position, cutting sequence, forming sequence and final part separation.

The supplier must also evaluate whether the component is suitable for progressive tooling. Large panels, deep-drawn parts, components requiring rotation between stations or low-volume projects may be better suited to transfer dies, single-operation dies or prototype tooling.

For suitable parts, the supplier should develop a process that balances material utilization, tool length, station load, part accuracy, maintenance access and production reliability.

Progressive Die Service Scope

Changdong’s progressive die service covers the main stages required to move a tooling project from concept to press validation.

Drawing ReviewReview the product model, material, thickness, critical dimensions, tolerances and expected production quantity.
Process PlanningEstablish the cutting, bending and forming sequence and identify potential risks involving cracking, springback or carrier instability.
Strip LayoutDefine feed pitch, pilot locations, carrier structure, station progression, scrap direction and material utilization.
Die ManufacturingManufacture die plates, punches, inserts, forming components and supporting structures according to the approved design.
Tryout and ValidationVerify strip feeding, station performance, part release, dimensional results and agreed sample requirements.

Progressive Die Operation

During progressive die operation, coil or strip material enters the tool through a feeder and advances by a fixed pitch after every press stroke. Pilots locate the strip before the cutting and forming components complete their assigned operations.

Early stations may pierce pilot holes or remove material. Intermediate stations may produce slots, bends, flanges, beads, embossments or shallow drawn features. The last station normally separates the finished component from the carrier strip.

Stable operation depends on synchronized feeding, accurate pilot engagement, controlled punch-to-die clearance, reliable stripping and uninterrupted scrap discharge.

Progressive Die Press Requirements

The progressive die press must match the tooling in tonnage, bed size, shut height, stroke, feed direction and operating speed. Selecting a press only by nominal tonnage can create installation and production problems.

  • Press capacity must exceed the calculated cutting and forming load.

  • The press bed and bolster must support the full die footprint.

  • Shut height and stroke must match the die structure.

  • Feeder accuracy must support the required strip pitch.

  • The press should provide adequate rigidity for dimensional control.

  • Sensors and scrap monitoring may be required for automated operation.

Changdong operates press equipment for die tryout and process validation. Additional information is available on our stamping press capability page.

Industry Insight: Lowest Tool Price Does Not Equal Lowest Production Cost

Procurement teams often compare suppliers mainly by initial tooling price. However, the total cost of a progressive die also includes tryout time, press downtime, scrap rate, insert replacement, maintenance labor and dimensional instability during production.

A lower-priced die can become more expensive if it requires frequent adjustment, produces excessive burrs or cannot maintain stable feeding. Supplier evaluation should therefore include tooling structure, replaceable components, press compatibility, maintenance access and validation criteria.

How to Evaluate a Progressive Die Supplier

A supplier should be assessed on engineering capability, manufacturing control and project-delivery discipline rather than on sales claims alone.

Process EngineeringCan the supplier explain the strip layout, station sequence and major forming risks?
Tooling ConstructionAre punches, inserts and wear components designed for adjustment and replacement?
In-House CapabilityDoes the supplier control machining, assembly, tryout and inspection internally?
Validation MethodAre sample dimensions, feeding performance and press conditions evaluated before delivery?
Technical DocumentationCan the supplier provide agreed drawings, component lists and inspection records?

Industry Insight: A Stable T1 Sample Is Not the Same as a Production-Ready Die

A die may produce an acceptable sample at low speed while still containing production risks. Problems can appear only after continuous cycling, including punch heating, scrap accumulation, strip lifting, pilot wear and spring failure.

Production readiness should therefore be judged by repeated operation, not only by one inspected sample. The agreed validation plan should define press conditions, sample quantity, critical dimensions and any required continuous-run test.

Progressive Die and Stamping Integration

Successful progressive die and stamping integration requires the tool, press, feeder, strip material and inspection method to work as one production system. A die cannot compensate for inaccurate feeding, unsuitable press conditions or inconsistent material properties.

During project development, the tooling supplier should confirm the intended press specification, feed direction, coil condition, lubrication method and finished-part handling. These details influence die layout and should not be postponed until final installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should be included in a progressive die quotation?

The quotation should define tooling scope, design responsibility, material assumptions, press conditions, tryout requirements, sample quantity, inspection scope and delivery documentation.

Can a supplier manufacture from an existing die design?

Yes, but the design should still be reviewed against the current product model, material specification, press condition and customer tooling standard.

How is a progressive die validated?

Validation may include press tryout, strip-feed verification, continuous cycling, sample inspection and confirmation of agreed critical dimensions.

Why is press information required before die design?

Press tonnage, bed size, shut height, stroke and feed direction affect the die structure and installation method. Missing press data can result in tooling that does not fit the intended production equipment.
