Stamping Die Quality Control and Validation

Stamping die quality control should begin before machining and continue through material confirmation, component inspection, die assembly, press tryout, sample measurement and final delivery review. Final inspection alone cannot identify every tooling, forming or production risk.

Dongguan Changdong Tool & Die Co., Ltd. connects engineering, tooling manufacture, assembly, 45T–800T press tryout and dimensional inspection within the same project workflow. Inspection items and acceptance criteria are defined according to the drawing, material, die structure, project stage and agreed customer requirements.

Material Confirmation

Part material, thickness and selected die-component materials are checked against approved project requirements.

Process Inspection

Machined plates, punches, inserts, cutting edges and assembly relationships are inspected at suitable project stages.

45T–800T Tryout

Suitable in-house presses support die spotting, forming correction, feeding review and stamped-sample validation.

Dimensional Validation

CMM, 2D optical measurement, 3D optical scanning and checking fixtures are selected according to the part.

Quick Answer: How Is a Stamping Die Validated?

Stamping die validation combines tooling inspection with actual press results. The die is checked during manufacturing and assembly, tested on a suitable press, corrected according to forming and dimensional results, and supported by sample inspection. A die is not considered ready only because its individual components match the 3D design; feeding, cutting, forming, scrap discharge, springback and sample dimensions must also be reviewed under suitable project conditions.

T0, Correction Rounds and Sample Status

T0 First Tryout

The first assembled-tool tryout is used to observe basic feeding, cutting, forming, scrap flow, springback and sample condition. It may identify areas requiring correction.

T1 / Subsequent Tryout

After engineering adjustments, additional tryout rounds can be used to review corrected dimensions, forming stability and remaining issues. Stage names vary by customer.

OK or Approved Sample

Sample status is confirmed against the agreed drawing, inspection plan and customer approval process. Changdong does not apply one universal approval rule to every project.

A typical T0 sample timing is about 35 days after final drawings and technical requirements are confirmed. Actual timing and the number of correction rounds depend on die type, size, geometry, material behavior, engineering changes and project conditions.

Industry Insight: Measurement Does Not Replace Process Validation

A stamped sample can meet selected dimensions during one isolated press stroke while the tooling still has unstable feeding, scrap discharge, stripping or springback behavior. Conversely, stable press operation does not confirm that every critical feature meets the drawing.

Reliable validation therefore combines dimensional inspection with press observations and tooling-condition review. Trial quantity, run duration and acceptance evidence should be defined by the project instead of using an unsupported fixed stroke count.

Inspection Reports and Delivery Evidence

Depending on the agreed project scope, validation records may include:

  • Dimensional inspection results based on selected drawing characteristics

  • CMM, optical measurement or checking-fixture records when applicable

  • Sample identification and tooling tryout status

  • Engineering correction records or open-item lists

  • Material, hardness or treatment records when included in the project scope

  • Agreed tooling photographs, documents and shipment checklist

The exact report format, inspection quantity and measured characteristics should be confirmed before final validation. Not every dimension requires the same measuring equipment or inspection frequency.

Factory-Based Quality Support

Changdong was founded in 2012 and operates an approximately 4,000 m² factory with more than 80 employees. Die design, machining, assembly, tryout correction and sample inspection can be coordinated within one project. Selected forming and cutting working components may be heat-treated to approximately HRC 58–60, while TD and Super TD treatment are available for selected in-house die components when required by the project.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are part material and die steel confirmed?

Material grades, thicknesses and selected tooling-component materials are reviewed against approved project specifications. Certificates, hardness records or treatment documents can be managed when included in the agreed project scope.

What is checked during die assembly and spotting?

Typical checks include component fit, guide alignment, cutting clearance, shut height, contact condition and the movement of lifters, strippers or other mechanisms where applicable.

When are CMM, 2D measurement and 3D scanning used?

CMM is suitable for selected coordinate and datum features, 2D optical measurement for visible profiles and small flat features, and 3D optical scanning for broader complex-surface comparison. The method depends on the drawing and part condition.

Does an OK sample guarantee future production results?

No universal guarantee should be inferred. Future results also depend on production material, press condition, feeder setup, lubrication, maintenance and operating controls. Approval criteria are project-specific.

What is reviewed before a stamping die is shipped?

The review may cover tooling status, sample and report status, agreed project documents, accessories, open items and packaging requirements according to the confirmed delivery scope.
