
A progressive die performs multiple cutting and forming operations as a metal strip advances through successive tooling stations. A heavy duty progressive die is developed for projects involving higher cutting loads, forming loads, thicker materials, wider strips, large die structures or demanding structural components.

Each project is evaluated according to material grade, sheet thickness, part geometry, strip stability, production volume, feeder capability and customer press conditions.

General sheet thickness capability is approximately 0.3–12 mm, depending on material, geometry, process route and DFM review.
Die length may reach approximately 4,200 mm and product size approximately 1,200 mm under suitable project conditions.
Support includes strip-layout review, load evaluation, springback compensation, restriking, tryout correction and sample validation.
Heavy duty is not defined by one fixed sheet thickness or die weight. A progressive tool becomes heavy duty when the combined cutting perimeter, forming severity, material strength, strip width, station load, stripping requirement and die dimensions demand greater rigidity, stronger working components and more controlled press loading. The final tooling structure must therefore be determined from the actual drawing and production conditions.

Heavy-duty progressive tooling may combine piercing, trimming, bending, forming, restriking and cut-off loads in one press stroke. These loads do not always act at the center of the die. Changdong reviews station distribution and pressure-center movement to reduce uneven loading, die deflection and abnormal guide wear.
A thick or wide strip must remain stable throughout the progressive die. The strip carrier requires enough strength to resist sagging, twisting and deformation, while excessive carrier width increases material consumption. DFM review covers strip orientation, nesting, feed pitch, pilots, carrier bridges, scrap flow and station sequence. Higher cutting and forming loads increase the risk of punch chipping, cutting-edge wear, galling and insert damage. The progressive tool structure must provide sufficient die-set rigidity, guidance and working-component support. Where appropriate, selected punches, inserts and cutting edges can be designed as replaceable components. Selected working components may be heat-treated to approximately HRC 58–60, while TD or Super TD treatment is available for selected in-house die components when required by the project. Thick and high-strength materials may retain considerable elastic stress after forming. Depending on geometry and material grade, Changdong can support CAE review, over-bending, die-face compensation, restriking, station-sequence adjustment and tryout correction. The actual number and sequence of stations depend on forming severity, strip stability, dimensional requirements and press stroke. Additional idle, calibration or restriking stations may be required. A progressive die should not be forced into fewer stations when the result would increase forming risk, tool wear or dimensional variation.
Progressive tooling is effective when the component can remain attached to a stable strip carrier and the operations can be divided into sequential stations. However, very large parts, deep shapes, severe material rotation or unstable carrier conditions may be better suited to transfer dies, tandem dies or single-operation tooling.
Changdong evaluates geometry, production volume, material behavior, feeder capability and customer equipment before selecting the tooling route. The engineering objective is stable production, rather than placing every thick-metal project into a progressive die.
